Thank you for posting this. I've been recently diagnosed as being depressed and am not haveing the best support system from my husband. He says that we're all too over medicated, and I want to find research stating otherwise.

Thanks Mike! You won't be rid of me too easily though...we still will have to survive vicariate meetings together! Please know that I'll be keeping UBCatholic in my prayers as I move on...my time was short with you guys, but I'm better for it! Peace and all good!

Yes because no other religion other than Christianity has done evil. And all those Catholic hospitals never made a contribution. Oh yeah, the monks who printed all those books and the religious women who opened schools and Mother Teresa who fed the poor and cared for the dying--they were all so awful. #sarcasm.

Some people hate Christians because a lot of Christians are mean and assholes. No offense, but some are pretty nice. Others aren't. Christianity is just a hateful religion and there would not be so much prejudice in the world if Christianity never existed.

I have to admit I've gotten into the habit of avoiding eye contact with the homeless, although here in San Francisco it's almost a necessary habit just to make it down the street in a timely manner. I don't think people realize how serious the problem is here. I have to pass at least a dozen homeless people in the few blocks it takes to walk from my apartment to the grocery store. The majority of them are either meth heads or mentally ill, too, which means making eye contact can be a dangerous business. And that's in one of the most desireable neighborhoods in SF. Forget about the Haight or the Mission or the Tenderloin (which, no way would I walk through anyway, not in broad daylight at high noon, not for anything).

Maybe that makes me a bad person, but we're suffering from homeless fatigue around here. Maybe if other cities' solution to their homeless problem wasn't to give 'em $50 and a one-way Greyhound ticket to SF, that wouldn't be the case, but they do so it is.

I wrote a column for the diocesan paper about my failings in this regard last summer. There is a dignity even in saying, this is not help I can give. It made me think of this line in a poem by John O'Donohue: May you find in yourself a courageous hospitality...

Thanks for the reminder to continue to be willing to see, not turn away, from Christ in this distressing guise.

Mike! I love your dedication... mostly I love the Family Day and also the spiritual direction by Skype (would love to take you up on that... haha). Last year I wrote five resolutions, and I actually accomplished 4 of them fully and the other one mostly. This year I increased my list but I still think they are all doable. I'm excited to see what 2012 brings for both of us! Here's to a MAGIS (more!) kind of year :)

You will all be in my prayers. I led a Campus ministry trip to Glenmary a few years ago and it was great! At first the students were not too thrilled about the no technology and even no watch rule but in the end they all agreed it was very freeing! I know you will have a wonderful experience. Can't wait to hear all about it!
